 The Colmar Wine Fair has been around since 1948; it’s a show, a festival with open air theatre seating 10,000, a get-together for the trade and a great shop window for Alsace wines, all rolled into one. It’s organized every year by the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins d’Alsace (Alsace trade body) in association with the Association des Viticulteurs d’Alsace (growers’ body), aiming to single out the best Alsace wines from each grape variety made by independent growers, wine cooperatives, producer-vintners and Alsace wine traders. It took place (for the 35th time) on the 14th June and pitted Alsace AOC wines from the 2005 and 2004 vintages, and sparkling Crémant d’Alsace from 2004, 2003 and 2002 against each other. Out of some 2000 samples entered, 17% (as opposed to 19% last year) received Gold medals and 14% Silver. These medals were awarded by 450 professional tasters. Head for the Award Winners stand to get the list of top wines and taste several of them. (There’s another distinction for Alsace wines: the ‘Sigilles de la Confrérie Saint-Etienne’ (awarded by St-Stephen’s wine brotherhood): Every year, resulting from three extensive tasting panels organized in January, April (sparkling) and July, the Confrérie Saint Etienne awards a quality symbol called "Sigille des Vins d’Alsace".) HALLE AUX VINS (wine hall) 5pm: free tutored tasting of Alsace wines (Show restaurant) Mondays, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday Crowning of the Alsace wine queen and her princesses (11th Aug at 10.30am) They were chosen in June – for the whole year – by a jury for their skills in talking about Alsace wine, food and sightseeing. Their job is to meet tourists and take part in promoting Alsace and its wines throughout the Wine Show and various village fetes. The 2006 Alsace Wine Queen, the 53rd to hold this title, is Sophie SCHUTZ from Scherwiller. The Wine Hall Tasting area where you’ll find all 3 branches of the Alsace wine business: producer-vintners, wine cooperatives and grape growers. |
