Colmar Fair, wine wise

Article from 05-08-2006

The Colmar Wine Fair has been around since 1948; it’s a show, a festival with open air theatre seating 10,000, a get-together for the trade and a great shop window for Alsace wines, all rolled into one.

Wine’ events at the Colmar show

The Colmar ‘Grand Concours des Vins d’Alsace’ (wine competition)

It’s organized every year by the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins d’Alsace (Alsace trade body) in association with the Association des Viticulteurs d’Alsace (growers’ body), aiming to single out the best Alsace wines from each grape variety made by independent growers, wine cooperatives, producer-vintners and Alsace wine traders.

It took place (for the 35th time) on the 14th June and pitted Alsace AOC wines from the 2005 and 2004 vintages, and sparkling Crémant d’Alsace from 2004, 2003 and 2002 against each other.
Out of some 2000 samples entered, 17% (as opposed to 19% last year) received Gold medals and 14% Silver.
These medals were awarded by 450 professional tasters.

Head for the Award Winners stand to get the list of top wines and taste several of them.

(There’s another distinction for Alsace wines: the ‘Sigilles de la Confrérie Saint-Etienne’ (awarded by St-Stephen’s wine brotherhood):
Every year, resulting from three extensive tasting panels organized in January, April (sparkling) and July, the Confrérie Saint Etienne awards a quality symbol called "Sigille des Vins d’Alsace".)

At the show, non-stop events with BACCHUS

When the God of Wine pictures himself bathing in an exquisite world, where everyone you bump into is merely a vintage bottle and chance encounters soon become amusing, intimate and help Alsace’s vineyards blossom.
